The typical domestic manufacturer's warranty is 3 years/36,000 miles and for vehicles manufactured in Asia, 4 years/50,000 miles. Types of Warranties
Basic Warranty, also know as "Bumper to Bumper"- The specific terms established by each manufacturer (typically 3 years/36,000 miles for domestic and Asian vehicles and 4 years/50,000 miles for luxury cars) to repair vehicles for a specific time and/or mileage period. All factory installed parts and some dealer installed accessories are covered for defects and workmanship. Items such as tires, wiper blades, battery are generally not covered under the basic warranty, although some of these parts may have their own warranty.
Powertrain Warranty:
A separate extended powertrain warranty that offers protection beyond the basic warranty can be offered by many manufacturers. The powertrain warranty is applicable for major components such as the engine, transmission, and driveshafts. Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury have lengthened their powertrain coverage for 2007. Many other manufacturers offer longer powertrain warranties than basic warranties. Some offer powertrain coverage as long as 10 years / 10,000 miles.
Federal Emissions Warranty
The Federal Emissions Warranty guidelines are based on federal regulations and apply to vehicles in all 50 states. Vehicles are covered by two types of emissions control system warranty, "Emission Defect Warranty" and "Emissions Performance Warranty".
The Emissions Performance Warranty is usually for 3 years/50,000 miles and depends on the state where you live. The Defect Warranty is generally consistent with the manufacturer's bumper-to-bumper warranty with certain parts (catalytic converter and electronic emissions controls (PCM) for up to 8 years/80,000 miles. Please refer to your owner's manual for specific information on your emissions warranty.
Corrosion Warranty
Offers coverage for rust-through perforation on sheet metal for a specified term. Manufacturers usually state that all body sheet metal components are warranted against rust-through corrosion for 6 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Surface corrosion from scratched, nicks and dents are not covered under this warranty. As each manufacturer may have a different corrosion warranty in place, refer to your owner's manual for more information.
